Ng Teck Seng


Mr Ng Teck Seng was the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Principal Suona (Chinese oboe) Musician cum Dizi/Xiao (Chinese bamboo transverse flute & vertical end-blown flute) Musician from 1982 to 1995. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Conducting from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He had conducted the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and China National Opera and Dance Theatre Chinese Orchestra.

Mr Ng began making DI-ZI in 1986. In 1996, he started the intensive research on the DI-ZI acoustics design as well as others Chinese musical instruments. In 2005, he began making Erhu (Chinese two-stringed fiddle) and research on its acoustic properties. His research focuses on the data collection base on the standard-dimensions of the instruments which produce the optimal response and tone quality in the orchestra ensemble.

From 2014 to 2016, he was invited to lecture at the China Conservatory of Music. In 2017, he began his collaboration with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Assistant Professor PHD Chen Jer-Ming on the data collection of the DI-ZI acoustic properties by using computer AI systems.

Mr. Ng founded the Asian Music Technology (AMT) non-profit organization in 2018 with the mission of improving the acoustics of Asian musical instruments, especially the China ethnic musical instruments. Since 2014, he has been a constant Visiting Scholar at the China Conservatory Music technology Department.

To cultivate the next generation of flutists, Mr Ng conducts professional Dizi training from grade 1 to grade 9 (diploma grade), with a lot of successful students obtaining good grades even at Diploma level.
