BeadStak Studio

BeadStak Studio is a lampwork glass and silver smithing studio run by artisan, Lisa O'Toole. Trained in traditional Venetian glass making techniques (often referred to as lampwork) and silver smithing, Lisa has been creating jewellery for the past 8 years and teaching for 4.

Glass beads are made by working layers of coloured glass in a small flame to form a bead and decoration. Finished beads are then placed in a kiln where the glass is annealed to give it strength and durability.

Passionate about glass and a member of the International Society of Glass Bead Makers, Lisa enjoys sharing her knowledge with fellow makers and hobbyists. Classes are technique based, hands on and students can expect to be creating their own beads from the first class.

Fun and well-paced!

We had so much fun learning about and making glass beads! The lesson was well-paced and we learned a few techniques in the time we were there. We were able to make 5 beads each to take home. The bead studio was well-equipped and we were really spoilt for choice when it came to choosing glass rods because there were just so many! It was also good that Lisa briefed us thoroughly on the safety aspects of glass bead making so that we were aware of the do's and dont's prior to starting.

Great sense of accomplishment

The craft seems quite intimidating and technical, but Lisa was very reassuring, patient and generous with her guidance. The structure of her lesson imparted skills progressively so I felt that I had a good handle on the skills before moving on, which gave me confidence and a great sense of accomplishment. I found the craft very therapeutic and am already thinking about doing more of it. The only downside was that my friend and I were a little perfectionist so we took longer, finishing with 4.5 beads each. We think that if we take another lesson, we would do it separately so we could each go at our own pace. ;D

Awesome Experience Playing with Molten Glass

The class was excellent! Lisa was a very patient and experienced instructor and the small class size of 2 pax was perfect for this class, considering that we were working with molten glass. The class venue at Lisa's home was really well equipped and and we had a huge selection of glass rods to choose from and work with. After creating my first bead, I was instantly hooked! Even though we were working with molten glass, I never felt like there was any danger because Lisa was constantly by our sides, guiding us every step of the way and ready to step in. We created 5 beads per person, and even though we overran the time, Lisa offered to let us continue making another bead. I'd heartily recommend this class to everyone!
