  • Summarizing Data Using Pivot Table
This section will teach you to summarize the data. The function of Sum is a default one and is used by numeric values in the PivotTable. One can summarize, sort as well as filter numbers after entering fields in the Pivot table
  • Data Filtering
As the name suggests, this part of the training gives information on sorting data and displaying it. You will learn how to add a filter to your Pivot table to regulate the displayed data. There is also an option of turning the filter ‘on’ and ‘off’. The filter function is enabled through the slicer and we will teach you how to use and format the data slicer. It helps to analyze relationships between diverse data sets by creating measured columns with the help of formulas and charts. Further in this section, you will also learn how to get external data in the Power Pivot
  • DAX in Power Pivot
DAX is nothing but Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) language used in Power Pivot. You will learn about DAX functions. When you work on a calculation with DAX, it resembles more with an Excel formula than that used by VBA or HTML programming languages. Introduction

The Pivot table is a part of Excel’s important feature. It enables the user to mine essential data from a larger set of data. Pivot tables let the user summarize and analyze large amounts of data in short span of time in the form of lists and tables. It is an aspect of the spreadsheet which permits the data tables to be shuffled in multiple techniques for diverse views of the existing data.

In the world of data processing, Pivot table forms a tool for summarizing data sets. It is available through a number of software and is used for development of business. The miscellaneous functions of a pivot table include automatic sorting, calculating through functions such as summation and averages. The resulting solution is depicted in the form of reviewed and condensed data.

Pivot tables could also be handy for instantly making unbiased cross tabulations. One can arrange and modify the structure of reviewed data through drag and drop graphic function. The spinning function lends the name “Pivot table” to this concept. Pivot means one view to another. The word pivot table is a widely used common phrase by several users. Microsoft Corporation of the United States has branded the word as a composite PivotTable.

These tables could be implied to as de-fragmentation of relatively intricate online analytical processing concepts (OLAP).

The Pivot Tables tool remains as one of the most dominant yet daunting functions in Excel. It remains independent of the initial data design in the spreadsheet and could be achieved through dragging and releasing the columns in various sections.

History

Pivot Tables have come to be recognized as omnipresent in the circles of advanced Excel users. One also finds its mention as a requisite skill in resumes and has been found to be a desirable asset in job descriptions. These tables were conceived in 1986 by Pito Salas who worked at Lotus Corp. He is credited as the Father of Pivot Tables by Bill Jelen and Mike Alexander in their book Pivot Table Data Crunching. Pivot table came to be known only 5 years later at the time when Lotus Improv was announced for the NeXT platform in 1991.

The most innovative feature of Lotus Improv was the way clients operated it to classify and accumulate categories, and also transform views through dragging category names with their mouse. This utility presented helped to create the core model of today’s most extensively used pivot table. As he was running a new concept of Lotus Improv, he observed the outline of data in spreadsheets. He created a way, which would enable the user to spot these patterns and help them to create advanced data models in a short span of time. Improv helped users to define and store chunks of categories, and also alter views after dragging category names with the mouse. This principal functionality would form a base for creating pivot tables.

Lotus Development released Improv in 1991 and it came to be implemented by the Microsoft Windows in 1993. It was only in 1994 when Microsoft Excel announced “PivotTable” in the market. After a period of few years, Microsoft continued updating this feature with enhanced features for calculations and graphic depiction of tables. Their new additions such as the PivotTable Wizard have helped developers to make new modifications to the program.
