Duende SG (under What Box Studios)

Duende Singapura is an extension of What Box Studios, a registered company dealing with creative and performing arts. While What Box Studios covers a wide range, Duende deals solely with dance, focusing heavily on Spanish Dance.

"Duende" in Spanish Dance refers to the energy ensouled within a dancer during a dance, and it is from this term that we take our name. Previously operating under the cheeky handle of "Flamenco Flamingos" from its inception in 2014, the department was later rebranded as Duende as the company began to gain notice in Singapore, to reflect the passion that our dancers and students display.

Duende offers the structured syllabus of the IDE, with stronger dancers being recommended for assessment.

Founder Su Yun completed her majors under the Instituto de la Danza Española (IDE) with an Honours with Distinction, the highest grade obtainable in the syllabus. She is currently in training to obtain the title of Profesor De Baile. She has been granted a teaching license issued by the IDE and as such is teaching the lower grades of the IDE examination syllabus.

Su Yun studied ballet under renowned ballet instructor Sylvia McCully, dance techniques under Lionel Araya, Spanish Dance under Angel Gomez and Rose Borromeo and most recently under Deanna Blacher-Cohn (OAM), founder of Instituto de la Danza Española (IDE). She has also been under the instruction of Olga Pericet, Marco Flores, Paloma Gomez, Tomas Arroquerro, Jose Torres (principal dancer of the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theatre, Chicago), Clarisa Di Salvo and Manual Betanzos (founder of Academia de Manual Betanzos).

Reviews of Classes by Duende SG (under What Box Studios)

The day of the week I most look forward!!!

I do dance since ever in my life, I had done Flamenco before, never with such a great teacher and very well structured course/ syllabus . We can really see the progress of the class. Even of those with no previous dance experience!!!! I am so pleased I found it!!!!

The instructor was friendly, helpful and attentive

It was fun and the instructor knew her stuff. We learned some basic footwork and the castenets, and got a brief rundown on variations and practices of Spanish dance. The venue chosen seemed appropriate, and the lesson started on time. Would be keen on classes in the future if available.
